Practical Nutritional Research

Practical Research Methods Training: $97

This training will provide you with the foundation to understand different types of nutritional research and scientific methodology. You will learn how to conduct your own literature review, to determine your research questions, and hypothesis while providing you with a fundamental understanding of statistical analyses. This will allow you to critically evaluate research methodology, including statistical analysis and provide an understanding of how to interpret statistical results. In this training session you will also learn strategies for the interview process – this is also known as the information gathering, or methodology stage, of the research process:

  1. How to interpret client gathering data
  2. Interview skills
  3. Observational skills during an interview or meeting
  4. How to make recommendations
  5. Handling obstacles or non-compliant clients
  6. Understanding the stages of change and where your client falls along the model so that you know what to expect from them

Examples provided will be specific to current CAHN-Pro research projects, including the Type 2 Diabetes project, and the pregnancy and pediatric project.

You will also learn what constitutes primary, credible, relevant scientific research, where to find the research and how to properly reference and cite research in your own practice and in research studies. You will learn how to:

  • Understand the basic steps in the scientific research method so that you can understand and interpret statistical analysis
  • Value the importance of using peer-reviewed, credible, primary research in your client recommendations
  • Choose which diagnostic tests to recommend that clients have, how to interpret and apply test results into client recommendations.
  • Apply scientific research to your client sessions to ensure that you provide nutritional recommendations that lead to permanent lifestyle changes.
  • Understand the importance of incorporating scientific research in your practice – for use in your information handouts as well as your client interviews
  • Practice interview and observational skills
  • Have a basic understanding of goal setting as well as the 5 stages of change and how they apply to your client’s progress and success

CSNN AHN Laboratory Diagnosis and Tests is a mandatory course (Members have up to 3 years to take it) and will help maximize the information in this training. Instructor: Meredith MacKay graduated from the University of Prince Edward Island with a B.Sc. in Biology and Math. She then went on to complete her Masters (M.Sc.) in Nutritional Sciences, specializing in Type 2 Diabetes Epidemiology from the University of Toronto. Following the completion of her M.Sc., she completed the Registered Holistic Nutritionist Diploma program at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition. From there she began her own business, Eat Move Thrive – focusing on helping people lead healthier lives through good quality nutrition and fitness. She is a member of the extended Board of Directors of CAHN-Pro where she has researched and written the literature review for the Type 2 Diabetes Pilot Study, as well as helped to create the study protocol. Meredith has written the curriculum and teaches the Practical Research Training course and has consulted on numerous CAHN-Pro projects, including being a contributing author to the CAHN-Pro newsletter.
